Pacific defence ministers gather in Tonga

The inaugural south pacific defence ministers' meeting is under way in Tonga.

On the agenda, the strategic challenges facing the region, including the rise of China, and opportunities for defence forces to further enhance co-operation.

It's being attended by Australia's Defence Minister Stephen Smith, together with the those of New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Tonga.

There are also representatives of Chile and France involved, as well as observers from Britain and the US.
