Pacific Games to build relationship between PNG and northern Australia

Updated 9 October 2013, 11:47 AEDT

As the build-up continues for the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea in 2015, businesses in Northern Australia are looking to get in on the action.

In tropical Queensland, Advance Cairns, the peak regional body for economic development, together with the City's Chamber of Commerce, have begun working with games organisers to identify goods and services that can be supplied from Australia.

And the hope is that contracts sealed in the run up to the Games, could open doors to other deals with PNG in the future.

Mark Matthews is chief executive at Advance Cairns and he told Richard Ewart that with the size of the event - there are more participants in the Pacific Games than the Commonwealth Games - the business opportunities are substantial.

Presenter: Richard Ewart

Speaker: Mark Matthews, chief executive of Advance Cairns
