Pacific nations support Japan opposition to Atlantic whale sanctuary

Updated 4 July 2012, 10:56 AEST

An anti-whaling activist group has questioned the reason why a number of Pacific Island nations gave their support to opposing the creation of a whale sanctuary in the southern Atlantic.

The proposal was defeated by 38 votes to 21 at the annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission currently being held in Panama City. Japan led the opposition to the plan, saying it lacked "scientific backing", and that opposition was supported by Pacific nations like Tuvalu and Nauru, as well as China, Russia and South Korea.
