Gay marriage in New Zealand is a step closer with proposed legislation being reported back to parliament with majority support.

But a Samoan church minister in Auckland says the overwhelming majority of Pacific Island New Zealanders are strongly opposed to homosexual marriage..

Reverend Tavale Mataia of the Word of Life Church in Grey Lynn tells Bruce Hill that gay marriage appears to be being promoted by white New Zealanders, but the Pacific Island people won't accept it on religious and cultural grounds.

And tomorrow we'll hear from the sponsor of the bill, New Zealand opposition Labour Party MP Louisa Wall.

Presenter: Bruce Hill

Speaker: Reverend Tavale Mataia of the Word of Life Church in Auckland
