The government of Palau is cracking down on illegal fishing in its waters, with plans to raise the minimum fine to $500,000.

In the most serious cases, that fine could rise to a maximum of $1 million.

And to really ram the message home, the President has sanctioned the destruction of offending boats.

Bernadette Carreon in Koror says the first boat burning is expected to take place at sea some this week.
