Palau prison authorities ordered to not use solitary confinement

Updated 14 January 2015, 9:39 AEDT

A senior judge in Palau has ordered prison authorities not to use solitary confinement on prisoners, with allegations being made that the conditions inside it are "cruel and inhumane".

The temporary order was made after two prisoners took their cases to court late last year.

The judge, Justice Asby Pate, made his decision after taking quite an unexpected trip to the solitary confinement room itself.
