PNG and Australia commemorate 70th anniversary of key battles

A group of eight Australian veterans of the fighting against Imperial Japanese forces in Papua New Guinea during the Second World War, will return to the country next week to mark the 70th annivesaries of the battles.

They will be part of the ceremonies to commemorate the fighting on the Kokoda Track and what are known as, the Beachhead battles.

The campaign was a long struggle that ended with the total defeat of the Japanese forces that invaded New Guinea during 1942.

Tim Bryson is the First Secretary to the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby and he spoke to John Papik about the commemorations.
