PNG Government tackling shortage of thousands of teachers

Updated 11 October 2013, 12:01 AEST

In Papua New Guinea, the acting Secretary of Education, Dr Michael Tapo, says claims that the country is short of ten thousand teachers have to be treated with caution.

There are suggestions from within Dr Tapo's own department that the situation is worsening as experienced teachers retire, while others resign to take up more lucrative posts in other industries.

Dr Tapo himself doesn't deny there is a problem, but he says it's a problem that the government is dealing with.
