PNG immigration minister says successful asylum seekers will be his choice

Updated 12 May 2014, 10:14 AEST

Papua New Guinea's Immigration Minister says he will choose which refugees are resettled in his country.

His statement would appear to contradict the Australian Immigration Minister's assertion that any asylum seeker detained on Manus Island who is deemed to be refugee will be resettled within PNG.

Rimbink Pato says his government will take the advice of an expert panel which is due to hand down its policy suggestions later today.

Presenter: Liam Cochrane

Speaker: Rimbink Pato, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Papua New Guinea
