PNG PM O'Neill says Indonesia promised reduced military in West Papua

Updated 27 March 2015, 18:29 AEDT

Papua New Guinea prime minister Peter O'Neill says the previous Indonesian President promised him he would reduce the number of troops they have stationed in West Papua.

He says he wants to take a diplomatic approach to the issue of the future of the mainly Melanesian and Christian western half of New Guinea island.

Mr O'Neill says the removal of West Papuan independence leader Benny Wenda from PNG yesterday, after he arrived without a visa, was a simple immigration matter and not a political issue.
