The president of the East Sepik Council of Women, Sophie Mangai, was allegedly assaulted and detained by PNG police earlier this week when she fronted the Wewak station to raise a rape claim.

It's alleged the the station commander greeted the group reporting the case by firing gunshots into the air before assaulting Ms Mangai.

The group was there to raise the case of a woman who claims to have been raped by several other police officers.

Florence Parinjo says arrests are continuing, including the family members of the woman who made the rape claim.
