Police in Papua New Guinea have arrested a radio announcer for allegedly spreading false information about a police traffic operation in Port Moresby.

It's believed the three-day operation involved local officers, accompanied by Australian Federal Police officers, checking drivers' licences and car registrations.

Local reports say police allege the announcer cracked a joke on air about how motorists can bribe officers with betelnut and Coca Cola.

PNG correspondent Liam Cochrane explains.
