PNG revokes Indonesian fugitive's passport

Updated 25 January 2013, 10:26 AEDT

Papua New Guinea's government has revoked the PNG passport of an alleged Indonesian fugitive, Djoko Tjandra, who was allegedly issued a PNG citizenship in 2012.

Djoko is wanted by Indonesian authorities over charges of bank fraud and has since been evading Indonesian police since 2009 when he escaped to Port Moresby.

PNG's Foreign Affairs Minister Rimbink Pato says the circumstances under which Djoko was issued a passport was illegal, improper as it was issued under a different name, that of, Joe Chan.

He says he has used his powers to revoke the passport bearing that name, which was reportedly being used by Djoko.

Mr Pato says this means Djoko Tjandra is no longer a citizen of PNG and will not be allowed to enter the country.
