PNG Speaker increasingly isolated over removal of carvings

Posted 17 December 2013, 19:05 AEST

Papua New Guinea's church leaders are calling for a conference involving political and religious leaders to settle the issue of the removal of carvings from Parliament.

Speaker Theo Zurenoc has had carved heads on the lintel and the tops of totem poles inside the building taken down and partially destroyed. He claims this is to cleanse Parliament of what he says are evil spiritual influences. But he is increasingly isolated, with political, trade union and now Christian leaders denouncing his actions.

Presenter: Bruce Hill

Father Danny Guka, President of the PNG Council of Churches
