PNG Supreme Court ruling hailed by former Ombudsman

Updated 27 January 2014, 18:12 AEDT

A former Papua New Guinea Ombudsman has publicly thanked the country's Supreme Court for striking down proposed new government laws.

Peter Masi says proposed legislation on an Independent Commission of Corruption were actually designed to water down the powers of the Ombudsman to fight corruption.

He also says the Speaker of Parliament should apologise for his role in trying to get the bills passed.

Peter Masi says the Supreme Court ruling sends an important signal to PNG and also to the wider Pacific region.

Presenter: Bruce Hill

Speaker: Peter Masi, former PNG Ombudsman
