Earlier this week, before the release of the Defence White Paper, Australian Defence Minister Stephen Smith was in Tonga for a meeting with other defence ministers from around the region.

As well as Tonga, there were ministers from New Zealand and PNG, and representatives from Chile, the USA, the United Kingdom and France.

It's the first time a meeting has been held like this, and those taking part were brought up to date on what Australia's changing defence priorities will mean for them.

After the meeting PNG's Defence Minister Dr Fabian Pok, spoke to our reporter Monalisa Palu.
