Papua New Guinea's government has established a public real estate firm to take over the roles and functions of its dysfunctional National Housing Corporation.

The government has appointed John Dege as its new Executive Chairman of the new firm, National Housing Estate Limited.

He says the Housing Corporation had failed miserably in its core functions to build, own and put on rent affordable accommodation to Papua New Guineans in the last three decades.

Mr Dege says the new firm has taken over several properties and plans to renovate other run down properties owned and managed by the Corporation.
