PNG's Madang Province 8 people die trying to cross flooded river

Updated 5 March 2013, 17:54 AEDT

Authorities in Papua New Guinea's Madang province say eight people have died attempting to cross a flooded river in the province.

Madang's Deputy Provincial Administrator, Galun Kassas says they tried to cross the river because the Surinam Bridge has been washed away.

The key bridge that used to link Madang and Morobe provinces was hit by flooding caused by heavy rains last week.

Mr Kassas has told our reporter, Firmin Nanol, a temporary Bailey bridge is being organised to reconnect Madang and Lae.
