Updated 15 May 2012, 17:18 AEST

Papua New Guinea's former Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare has again indicated he intends to contest next month's national elections.

Sir Michael said this after telling his National Alliance Party members just more than a week ago that he's quitting politics after 44 years.

But speaking today on Radio Wewak in his East Sepik province, Sir Michael said he's got a lot of unfinished business to do.

The 76-year old says he's therefore going to consult with his constituents about his intention to stand for re-election.

Speaker: Sir Michael Somare, PNG's former Prime Minister
