Police crackdown at Manus asylum processing centre

Papua New Guinea police have charged 18 asylum seekers on Manus Island with various offences including assault and attempted escape.

The arrests follow a series of incidents at the Australian processing centre on the island over the last few months.

But refugee advocates say conditions in the Manus Island centre are atrocious and an apparent crackdown by police is disgraceful.
