Updated 12 May 2014, 9:48 AEST

Postal and advanced voting has kicked off in Cook Islands ahead of the snap election on July 9.

Almost 10,500 registered voters will elect 23 members of parliament from the 52 candidates who registered to run this week.

Cook Islands journalist Helen Greig says Former Prime Minister Jim Marurai, now a Mangaia MP, has run uncontested confirming his place in Parliament for another four years, while things for current PM Henry Puna are less certain.

Presenter: Richard Ewart

Speaker: Helen Greig, journalist, Cook Islands
