Proposals to boost Pacific aquaculture

Increasing pressure on the region's fish stocks has made policy makers turn their attention to viable alternatives.

Aquaculture or fish farming is the fastest growing food-producing sector in the world contributing nearly 50 per cent of food fish supplies. However, while the Pacific Islands aquaculture industry is still quite small there is potential for considerable expansion. A recent meeting in Fiji hosted delegates from 21 Pacific Island nations to develop strageties to address future aquaculture management strategies.
