Rheumatic heart disease still taking its toll

It starts with nothing more than a sore throat, but rheumatic heart disease is responsible for the deaths of thousands of young people around the world every day, while millions develop chronic heart-related health problems.

So what can be done to prevent the disease from developing in the first place?

Dr Rosemary Wyber is the Rheumatic Heart Disease Program Manager at the Telethon Kids Institute in Western Australia.

She's just flown into Melbourne from Fiji to attend the World Congress on Cardiology and launch a new disease control handbook.
