Samoa PM says burning of Fiji constitution 'despicable'

Updated 11 January 2013, 10:25 AEST

Samoa's prime minister says the seizing of printed copies of Fiji's draft constitution and the burning of the proofs by police is despicable.

Tuilaepa Sailele says the incident raises doubts about the democratisation process in which Fiji is supposed to hold free elections in 2014.

The head of Fiji's Constitution Commission, Professor Yash Ghai, says police confiscated copies of the draft constitution and burned the proofs in what he says was an illegal act.

The coup-installed military government says it was Professor Ghai who was acting illegally by printing the copies without authority.

Samoa's prime minister, Tuilaepa Sailele, says the incident makes it uncertain whether the elections promised by Fiji's interim prime minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama will ever take place.
