Updated 10 July 2014, 9:03 AEST

Hundreds of scientists from around the world are gathering in Fiji to find a solution to the Pacific's notorious record for species extinction.

The Society for Conservation Biology's conference is hoping to find a way to stop an even greater decline.

Presenter: Jake Sturmer

Speaker: Doctor Sangeeta Mangubhai, marine biologist; Professor Richard Kingsford, University of New South Wales
