Signatories to Noumea accord to meet next week

Updated 14 November 2012, 18:33 AEST

The French overseas territories minister, Victorin Lurel, is due to visit New Caledonia next week to pave the way for the next meeting of the signatories to the Noumea accord in Paris next month.

Minister Lurel is expected to spend four days consulting New Caledonia's leaders, with a particular focus on the cost of living in the French territory, and the eventual transfer of power, but it's thought he'll steer away from the highly sensitive issue of a common flag.

The Paris meeting that follows on December 6th will be chaired by the French Prime Minister, Jean-Marc Ayrault, who only took office in May.

Presenter: Richard Ewart

Speaker: Denise Fisher, Australia's former Consul-General in Noumea
