The man who set Fiji's coup culture in motion has quit politics.

Major General Sitiveni Rabuka says a loss of his traditional support bases and a change in the style of leadership in Fiji at the moment are among the reasons he's quit.

But General Rabuka would not say if he was going to withdraw his application to join the Constituant Assembly.

Major General Rabuka lead the country's first coup in 1987.

He told Geraldine Coutts that he feels his services are no longer required.

Presenter: Geraldine Coutts
