Socio-economic problems contribute to spike in abortions in Vanuatu

Updated 24 April 2014, 8:39 AEST

Youth unemployment, urban drift and lack of economic opportunities are reasons being given for a spike in abortion rates in Vanuatu.

Chairwoman for Women Against Crime and Corruption Jenny Ligo says she knows of at least 10 abortions this year.

Ms Ligo thinks a chief on Tanna has got it wrong when he blamed women for the problem - she believes men and women are equally responsible.

As abortion is illegal and the country's motto is "in god we stand" Ms Ligo thinks that helps promote a conservative attitude to the issue.
