Solar power for Tonga's outer islands

All homes in Tonga's outer islands will soon have solar power units.

This coincides with the Pacific Leaders' Energy Summit in March, which will see the Tonga Energy Road Map being put forward as a possible example for other Pacific countries to follow.

Tonga already has one solar farm on the main island of Tongatapu with another to be installed this year, as well as 512 solar power units on Vava'u.

The energy summit co-organiser and director of the Tonga Energy Road Map, Inoke Vala, tells ABC intern Louisa Wright that solar power could provide clean energy for smaller islands that rely on oil or kerosene at the moment.
