Stars and stripes replaced with Hawaiian flag in university protest

Updated 11 December 2014, 10:51 AEDT

The University of Hawaii is due to deliver its formal response later today, after a group of students and activists took down the American flag flying at the main entrance.

The Hawaiian flag flying beneath the star spangled banner was raised to the top of the pole instead.

The switch was a gesture reflecting the on-going campaign by those who claim the Hawaiian Kingdom is illegally occupied by the United States.

University of Hawaii student La'akea Caravalho, who was involved in the protest, says the students had gone through the official modes of protest before removing the flag.
