Stronger commitment to Pacific relations would reduce their volatility: academic

Updated 13 February 2013, 17:36 AEST

Australia's commitment to its Pacific relationships needs to be strengthened to reduce their volatility.

That is the basis of a PhD thesis which looks at the overall engagement Australia has with its Pacific neighbours from 1988 - 2007.

Dr Jonathan Schultz has taken a look at the historical relationship and the policy which has underpinned the dealings between Australia and the Pacific.

He looks at the shaky relationship between Australia and the Pacific and if there really has been crisis points in the past relationship.

Presenter: Geraldine Coutts

Speaker: Dr Jonathan Schultz,  University of Melbourne
