Thousands of Australian homes at risk of peak floods

Updated 29 January 2013, 9:22 AEDT

It's been a long night at Ipswich in north-east Australia, where flood waters have threatened hundreds of homes and businesses - just two years after widespread destructive flooding in 2011.

In the major city of Brisbane, about five thousand homes and businesses are at risk of inundation when floodwaters peak there later this morning. Dozens more homes in nearby towns are already underwater, and a quarter of a million properties spent the night without electricity.
