Tongan pumice reaches Great Barrier Reef

Updated 26 July 2012, 10:01 AEST

Australian scientists have discovered a mechanism in the Pacific Ocean that unites the reef systems of the islands and Australia.

Dr Scott Ryan, a geologist from the University of Queensland, has published his findings this week in the journal PLoS One.

He told Isabelle Genoux that the eruption of Tonga's Home Reef volcano in 2006 left billions of pieces of pumice floating on the ocean that eventually got to Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
