UN figures indicate a drop in AIDS/HIV rates

UN figures indicate a drop in AIDS/HIV rates

According UNAIDS the HIV figures in PNG have declined from epidemic proprotions to less than one percent of the general population.

The HIV infectrions are highest in at risk groups such as sex workers, men who have sex with men and transgender groups. Unprotected sex in all categories is the reason given for the STI's or sexually transmitted infections remaining alarmingly high. UNAIDS coordinator for PNG Stuart Watson says figures reported in the media recently were wrong and the HIV rates are falling.
