Vanuatu authorities on alert amid rise in volcanic activity

Updated 25 February 2015, 10:09 AEDT

There are no immediate evacuation plans for the island of Ambrym in Vanuatu after the weekend volcanic eruption, but the National Disaster Management office say they are ready to act if needs be.

Volcanic activity increased after a magnitude 6.6 earthquake and what was described as a mini tsunami two days earlier, that caused some minor damage.

The operations manager at the NDM office, Peter Korisa, says they are monitoring the volcano closely and urged residents to be alert.
