Vanuatu meeting to seek a unified West Papuan voice

Updated 15 July 2014, 8:22 AEST

Preparations are underway for a major conference of West Papuan groups in Vanuatu next month.

It's hoped representatives of various groups will be allowed to travel to Vanuatu in the hope of forming a united representative group.

The Melanesian Spearhead group last months knocked back a membership application by West Papua National Coalition for Liberation saying any future membership bid should come from a more representative umbrella group.

Pastor Alain Nafuki, the chairman of the West Papua Unification Committee says he hopes Indonesia will allow groups to travel from West Papua to attend the meeting.

Presenter: Richard Ewart

Speaker: Pastor Alain Nafuki, chairman, West Papua Unification Committee
