Vanuatu opposition demands government refuse Indonesian uniforms

Updated 27 February 2013, 10:34 AEDT

The former Vanuatu prime minister and opposition MP Barack Sope is calling on the government to reject a gift of police uniforms from the government of Indonesia.

The gift was made by Indonesia's new ambassador to Vanuatu, Nadjib Riphat Kesoema, when he presented his credentials to President Iolu Johnson Abil.

Vanuatu has long been a haven for refugees from the Indonesian Province of West Papua, and Mr Sope says the gift is an attempt by Indonesia to change Vanuatu's position on Papua.
