Volcano eruption may lead to tourism rush

Updated 8 August 2012, 10:01 AEST

New Zealand's Mount Tongariro volcano caught everyone by suprise when it decided to rumble back to life after being dormnant for more than 100 years.

Monday night's eruption with "flame-like explosions", red hot lava rocks blown into sky and then an ash blanket had volcanologists scrambling.

Thankfully the mountain has settled down a bit since then but companies that run businesses in the area are concerned.

So will the eruption keep tourists away or cause a rush of the curious?
