Voyagers call for end to 'barbaric and unsustainable' shark finning

Updated 7 June 2013, 9:11 AEST

Tonga's voyaging society says it's devastated to discover shark finning is continuing to take place in Tongan waters.

The head of the Kalauni 'o Tonga Voyaging Society, Aunofo Havea says the practice must stop and she's called on Tongan supermarkets to remove shark fins from their shelves.

Shark finning is a major issue in the Pacific with conservationists claiming Fiji is becoming a hub for shark finning.

New Caledonia recently joined others in outlawing the practice last month but Tonga is yet to establish specific legislation.
