Wellington prepares for Hobbit mania with movie premiere

Updated 28 November 2012, 18:38 AEDT

Wellington is gearing up for one of the biggest days of the year today, with Peter Jackson's Hobbit movie opening later this evening.

Many of the movie's stars are already in town, and a 500 hundred metre carpet is being rolled out to welcome them into Middle Earth tonight.

It's the fourth film in Peter Jackson's series based on the books by JRR Tolkein, and it's expected to be a huge commercial success.

Crowds of up to 15-thousand people are expected to watch the premiere on big screens set up in Wellington's CBD tonight.

All of this means a financial boon for Wellington and New Zealand's tourist industry.

Presenter: Geraldine Coutts

Speaker: Jodi Williams, Head of International Marketing for Air New Zealand
