WHO calls for sustained momentum in TB fight

WHO calls for sustained momentum in TB fight

Updated 18 October 2012, 9:47 AEST

The World Health Organisation has published its latest Global Tuberculosis Report today.

Since efforts to treat and prevent tuberculosis were stepped up 17 years ago, the report says around 20 million lives have been saved worldwide. But the WHO warns of a risk of losing momentum in the battle to keep TB under control, due to shortfalls in commitments to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria of up to $3 billion annually, and reduced research investment in the United States.

Dr Mario Raviglione, director of Stop TB at the WHO, says infection rates and mortality are coming down in the Pacific, broadly in line with global successes, but says specific challenges remain in countries like Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
