Women's day celebrated around the region

Updated 8 March 2013, 19:00 AEDT

Women across the Pacific have spent today celebrating and recognising International Women's Day.

In many areas, the celebrations recognised what women had achieved in the face of opposition to them taking a leadership role in society.

But it comes at a time where there are still few women in the region's parliament, and where there are still shockingly high levels of violence against them.

That's led to calls by women, to women, to take their push for recognition seriously.
