Natural disasters and the effects of climate change have been the subject of a major regional conference in Fiji this week.

The Pacific Platform for Disaster Management has involved government officials, the UN and NGOs in thrashing out a co-ordinated regional approach to the impact of climate change, and events like cyclones, earthquakes and tsunamis.

The Pacific strategy will be presented at the World Conference on Disaster Reduction in Japan next March.

Filomena Nelson, the National Disaster Manager for Samoa chaired the conference and says the 'world first' strategy is now ready for the next step.
