A ban on plastic shopping bags has come into effect in Yap, in the Federated States of Micronesia, in an attempt to reduce the number polluting the local area.

If retailers are found to still be using plastic bags, they face a fine of 100 dollars.

The ban come after a six month lead-in period raising awareness amongs the community.
