Authorities in the United States say they have seized more than $US76 million worth of counterfeit Cisco Systems computer equipment manufactured in China.

Officials say the discovery was made during a joint operation conducted by the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with the aid of Chinese authorities.

The US Justice Department says by intercepting the counterfeit hardware at ports of entry and dismantling illegal supply chains in the US, the operation has achieved significant successes.

It says the operation protected the public from the risk of network infrastructure failures associated with the counterfeit computer equipment.

The Justice Department says the ongoing initiative has resulted in more than 400 seizures of counterfeit Cisco network equipment.
