A royal memorial service will be hosted by Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle in London tonight for the life of New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary.

The service will include a karanga, which is a traditional Maori welcoming ceremony, and addresses from Prime Minister Helen Clark and Sir Edmund's son, Peter.

New Zealand Singer Nick Madden and opera singer Jonathan Lemalu will both perform.

New Zealand television will broadcast the service which is expected to be attended by 1,000 people.

Sir Edmund achieved worldwide recognition as the first man to climb Mount Everest in May, 1953.

He died on January 11 this year, aged 88.
