Nauru's president, Marcus Stephen, says the opposition MP David Adeang is not carrying out his role as speaker appropriately.

Nauru's parliament reached crisis point on Easter Saturday when Mr Adeang, the newly-appointed speaker of parliament, called a secret session of parliament without ruling government members.

Mr Stephen has told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program the speaker should play a neutral role in the running of the parliament.

"They did these amendments on the weekend when we were not aware of any parliamentary sitting," he said.

"And it was done under candlelight, it's something that we feel is unparliamentary.

"We believe that it's wrong of the speaker not to even advise us that there is such a meeting."

Both sides are now waiting for a Supreme Court ruling on legislation passed during that session.
