Fresh outbreak of birdflu in India
Updated
There has been a fresh outbreak of bird flu in poultry in Tripura State in northeast India.
Veterinary workers have slaughtered thousands of chickens and ducks in Tripura, which borders Bangladesh, after preliminary reports that more than 3,000 birds had died.
A government official says the disease must have spread from Bangladesh, which has culled millions of birds but is struggling to contain the virus.
In the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, authorities say the deadly virus has resurfaced in Nadia district, which also borders Bangladesh.
West Bengal had briefly contained the outbreak by culling nearly four million birds in 14 of its 19 districts, but the virus has intermittently resurfaced.
Health workers in both states say they are monitoring local communities for any signs of human infection.
