Researchers say climate change could impact on the production of beer in Australia and New Zealand.

A climate expert from the New Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, Dr Jim Salinger, says climate change could cause a decline in malting barley production in both countries.

He says the result will either be pubs without beer, or a steep rise in the price of the beverage.

Dr Salinger says production in Australia was likely to be hit harder than New Zealand.
