An increase in government funding will see an easing of the housing problems facing prison staff in Solomon Islands.

The country's police and prison services have both faced difficulties finding staff because of the lack of proper housing, especially in the provinces

The deputy commissioner of correctional services, Heinz Konga, says the budget increase will help alleviate a long term problem.

"Our plan for 2008 sees a drive to further improve housing with a 4.5 million (SI dollars) allocated for construction of 10 new houses at Naha and the refurbishment of others to completed this year.

"Two new houses will be constructed at (Tetere) together with the refurbishment of 11 of houses at a cost of 2.8 million Solomon dollars."
